Caring for poultry in winter

Bed-Down - Just Better British Bedding

Use quality poultry bedding, maintain the right feeding routines and encourage natural behaviours. Take good care of your birds this winter.

Winter can be a challenging time for poultry keepers in Great Britain, with cold temperatures, short days, persistent rain and occasional snow all affecting the health and wellbeing of birds. While most chickens and other poultry are hardy, they still rely on good husbandry to stay comfortable and productive through the colder months. With a few simple adjustments, you can help your flock remain healthy and content until spring arrives.

Keeping housing dry and draught-free is one of the most important considerations in winter. Poultry coops should be well ventilated to allow moisture to escape, but without direct draughts at bird level. Damp conditions can quickly lead to respiratory issues and frostbite, particularly on combs and wattles. Regular cleaning and fresh, absorbent poultry bedding help keep the coop dry and reduce ammonia build-up, which is especially important when birds spend more time indoors.

Water management also needs extra attention. Drinkers can freeze overnight, so checking and refreshing water supplies morning and evening is essential. Using drinkers designed to cope with cold weather or placing them slightly off the ground can help reduce freezing. Adequate hydration is vital, even in cold conditions, as dehydration can affect digestion and egg production.

Feeding routines may need adjusting during winter too. Birds burn more energy keeping warm, so ensuring they have access to a balanced diet is key. Layers should continue to receive a good-quality layers’ feed, while a small amount of mixed corn in the late afternoon can help provide energy to see them through cold nights. Treats should be given sparingly and never replace their main ration.

Shorter daylight hours naturally reduce egg laying, which is normal and nothing to worry about. Allowing hens to rest during winter can actually support better productivity in the long term.

Encouraging natural behaviours such as scratching and foraging, either outdoors on dry days or indoors with suitable poultry bedding, helps keep birds active and reduces boredom. And finally, regular health checks are just as important in winter as in summer. Keep an eye out for signs of weight loss, lethargy or respiratory issues, and act quickly if anything seems amiss. With thoughtful care and routine attention, your poultry can stay warm, healthy and well throughout the British winter.
