Do you know your horse breeds?

Bed-Down - Just Better British Bedding

Horses have long been part of British life, and across the UK the thoroughbred, the Shetland pony and the Welsh pony have become iconic.

So let’s take a little look at these three of the nation’s favourite horse breeds.

The Thoroughbred is perhaps the most recognisable horse breed in the world, synonymous with speed, elegance and athleticism. Originating in Britain during the 17th and 18th centuries, Thoroughbreds were developed for racing by crossing native mares with imported Arabian stallions. They’re tall, slim and finely built, with a graceful appearance and a keen, spirited temperament. Away from the racetrack, Thoroughbreds excel in many equestrian disciplines, including eventing, show jumping and dressage. They’re intelligent and sensitive and thrive under experienced riders who appreciate their energy and drive.

A very different breed, the Shetland Pony is one of Britain’s smallest but strongest native breeds. Originating from the rugged Shetland Isles, these hardy ponies evolved to survive in harsh conditions, giving them exceptional stamina and resilience. Despite standing no more than 42 inches high, Shetlands are renowned for their strength, capable of pulling loads twice their own weight. Their thick coats, short legs and broad bodies make them well suited to cold climates. Gentle yet occasionally cheeky, Shetland Ponies are much loved as children’s ponies, therapy animals and companions.

The Welsh Pony, another beloved native breed, comes from the hills and valleys of Wales. Known for their beauty, intelligence and versatility, Welsh Ponies are divided into several sections based on size and build: from the dainty Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A) to the larger, more substantial Welsh Cob (Section D). They’re agile, sure-footed and full of character, making them equally suited for showing, riding and driving.

Whether your passion is racing, riding or simply enjoying the company of these magnificent animals, understanding different breeds deepens your appreciation of the horse world. Each breed carries its own story, temperament and strengths, and that’s what makes Britain’s equine heritage so special.
